Jamestown 2007

What better time to visit Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia than during America’s 400th Anniversary celebration? As the first permanent English-speaking establishment in the New World, Jamestown observes its place in American history by hosting an eighteen-month commemoration that will span the entire commonwealth and generate spirit across the country.

The festivities began in May, 2006 with America’s Anniversary Weekend at Historic Jamestown, Jamestown Settlement, and Anniversary Park. The celebration continued with the launch of Godspeed, an authentic replica of the original ship that was one of the first three sails to transport settlers from Europe. With its first port-of-call in Alexandria, Virginia, the “floating museum” will dock at six major cities along the eastern coast—each stop hosting its own landing party and special events.

Continuing until fall of 2007, this important American landmark will be cause for a calendar-full of unique celebrations, Williamsburg events, and learning opportunities. Experience the diverse heritages of Native Americans at the American Indian Intertribal Cultural Festival; observe the turning point of the American Revolution at the 225th Anniversary battle reenactment of the victory at Yorktown; explore 400 years of the religious, political, and artistic imprints of African Americans; travel back four centuries at the Jamestown Settlement Museum’s “World of 1607”—an exhibit featuring artifacts from over 30 museums worldwide.

With ten signature events and hundreds of smaller-scale cultural and educational celebrations, America’s 400th Anniversary is just one more reason to visit the birthplace of America.
