Williamsburg dates back to 1699 when it was planned and built to function as the capital of Virginia - the most prosperous and influential of the American colonies during that time period. Williamsburg was at the center of important cultural, political and military events leading up to the American Revolution. Many of the ideals that formed our nation were debated in the very homes, courtyards and taverns that still stand today along Duke of Gloucester Street.
